As soon as you can acquire and internship. Even if you don't want to go BIG4 try and acquire one for an internship as it will look very good on a resume. As a freshman/sophomore a bank can be helpful, but be careful with that. Tellers don't seem to learn much regarding accounting. I had a friend who worked as an assitant manager and his experience was invaluable, If the choice is between a teller and working in AR or AP I would carefully consider those two areas first. It looks just as good as Bank Teller on resume, and will be helpful in classes since you will have real life experiences that you can apply to the classes.
Between the Sophmore and Junior years (as well as Junior to Senior) try for internships. Big4's are best. Especially if you want to go Big4 because they will offer positions to some after the internship. (See Dawgy for confirmation on that.) Even if you don't like it, the experience looks great on a resume. If Big4 is not available go with something close to audit.

If you would like to stick with accounting, I would suggest you go for Big 4 internship in audit line. Auditing would give you a very good exposure

Hello,
Why do you recommend auditing?
I am studying at the moment. I will graduate next March. I am new to the real world of accounting and I am not sure which direction should I take to pursue my accounting career. My initial idea was to monitor various job advertisements and learn about the salaries, the number of positions available in certain fields etc. Now, I think it's better to talk to someone who is experienced.

I've worked as an auditor for qutie some time and leap frogged to a private company. Since then, I have been missing the stuff I did way back when I was in audit. 1) You can learn so much when you are in audit, of course depending on how complex your clients are. 2) You get to meet a lot of people - client contacts, peers etc. 3) Pay is high - (except for us here in the Philippines)
You should think hard though before signing up as an auditor.. because you are in for a lot of sleepless nights, long working hours and sometimes hard-to-deal with clients
hope this helps

Auditing is the way to start as a new graduate in accounting major. I cannot tell you why. You will know the benefit of being an auditor once you start doing it yourself.
There will be lots of stories, bad and good.
Keep your mind wide open.
