General question regarding being on parent's medical insurance...

I am currently on my parent's medical insurance plan, that is they pay for it because I am still a student up until the age of 25. Now if I take a year off in between applying, does that mean I now have to insure myself? I dont knw if this is a general question or more insurance company specific, but does anybody have any info regarding that? Thank u!!:lol::lol:

It is definitely insurance company specific. Plus, you might want to ask them if you take a year off and have to come off your parent's insurance if you can be claimed back on it. I know when I was in college too long ago and I took a semester off before d-school, I was not allowed back on their insurance after I was back in school even though I would still have qualified if I had just stayed in school.:ermm::ermm::ermm:

i took a year off between undergrad and dental school, so i can relate...

if i'm covered under my mom's plan, which is an HMO, then i'm only covered in emergency situations during dental school since i'm going to school out of state. my dad has a ppo, and i'm trying to decide if being covered under his plan would be cheaper than buying insurance through the school.

what type of insurance do your parents have? hmo or ppo? do you have siblings covered under their plans? if so, most plans don't increase the premium when adding more dependents.

Thanks for replies, completely forgot about this thread and was going to start one again ha:

OK, so for people that ARE taking a year off, did you get booted off your parents insurance? What did you do? Since I don't know what Dental School I will be attending, I cant "Find coverage that is equivalent to the dental school you attend" as in the above post.

Help please, very important question my parents have that I just can't answer:lol::lol::lol:

I am in the EXACT situation. We haven't asked yet because technically I still am a student now because to them I could be starting school in the fall which I am not. If they don't let me on after fall, I am either going to: 1)Buy the cheapest $40 a month insurance JUST IN CASE or 2)Stay in my house, never leave it, and pray I don't get hurt!!

I graduated in May and am also taking a year off. I recently called my dad's insurance company (CareFirst) and they said that I am covered until the age of 23 regardless if I'm still in school or not.:lol::lol:
