 Job Prospects

Hi Guys I am starting a foundation/access course this sept. I really want to go on to study dietetics as this is my main area of interest but i have to admit i am worried about the lack of jobs, esp jobs for new grads.

Does anyone else share these concerns or any Grads on the forum had probs getting jobs?

It is making me think of looking at other careers such as Occupational Health or Physiotherapy, although there seems a prob getting graduate jobs in these areas too.

Any thoughts? Just wondered how others felt about this or how easy/hard it has been for others to get jobs in the field?:^_^^_^^_^

would say if anything the problem is worse in OT and Physio - particularly physio.

It was pretty grim for last year's graduates and to start off this year. But the budget freezes do seem to be easing a bit and jobs are being advertised. Of my (admittedly small) cohort that is graduating this year at least half of us already have jobs and the others that are looking for work are all getting interviews. It's a lot better situation for those students that aren't fixed about where they are willing to work. If you are only willing to work in your local hospital it's always going to be a problem.

It's impossible to say what things will be like in 5/6 years time when you will be graduating. 4 years ago when we started they were crying out for graduates and experienced dietitians have told me that these things do tend to go in cycles.

The recent problem wasn't that there wasn't the need for more dietitians, simply that hospitals had to meet a budget which meant all recruitment was frozen. With the increase in obesity, diabetes and the aging population it really should be a growth field.

I guess this doesn't really answer your question. I think it's quite important to get a days observation with a dietitian, an OT and a physio and think about which one that you really want to do as the reality of the job can be quite different from what some students expect. It's always a bad idea to go out on your first placement and decide that it isn't what you want to do.

Hi Guys - the jo situation varies. I was a t a welsh board meeting today and all the Uwic students from last year have jobs - not all in wales ! I gather they are cutting the number of students down nationally so hopefuly may improve things - then we will have a shortage!
