 Research Ethics

Hi there,

I've been doing a lot of research on ethics as I prepare to volunteer my services as an applied anthropologist.

This will be my first project since getting my degree; my first project without going through the IRB process. I just want to confirm with other applied anthropologists what I think I have learned from the anthropological ethics literature....

Would you say that the following is a true statement?

Unless an applied anthropologist is connected with a university, an organization that receives federal funding, or is planning research in a community that has its own internal review regulations (e.g. many tribal communities), there is no organization or committee that oversees or reviews research proposals for human subjects protection.

I am doing everything I can to ensure that I conduct my research in an ethical manner, but I want to make sure that I'm not overlooking anything.

Thanks in advance!
;)

Hi Amy-
I feel your pain. I am embarking on a project in a new field of study (having interdisciplinary training) and incredibly miss the endless red tape of the IRB. I think one solution is to circulate your proposal to colleagues in an informal IRB process, being sure to take their feedback seriously. That is my plan as I embark on projects as an independent scholar.
