Located in the western part of the African continent, the Republic of Togo covers an area of 57,000 square km and has a population of 4.8 million belonging to 40 ethnic groups. The religious population is predominantly fetishist and Christian. French is the official language. Lome is the national capital. The current president is Faure Gnassingbe.
Since Togo established diplomatic relations with China on September 19, 1972, bilateral relations have been growing steadily and bilateral cooperation has been proceeding smoothly in all areas. Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong visited Togo in 2004 and Togolese President Faure visited China in 2006. Bilateral trade reached 570 million U.S. dollars in 2005.
