Private Universities

A private university is a university that is managed without the help or organization of any government groups. Many countries have private universities but not all do. They are most common in countries like Chile, India, Bangladesh, Mexico, United Kingdom, Portugal, United States, Japan and Lebanon. Private universities are not in every country and this might be because a private university’s tuition fees are much higher than a public university’s. Some public universities might not charge anything for tuition fees, but don’t expect too much from the university itself. The students will still learn what they need to at a public university, but they will not have the benefits that students would get at a private university.

Private universities often run by strong full-time courses with shorter vacation periods. This is to give the students an opportunity to finish their program faster, for example they might finish their three year degree in two years. The students don’t mind the shorter vacations as they will complete their studies more quickly and because it will reduce their living costs and they will be able to get full-time employment sooner than expected.

• Australia’s first private university was founded in 1987
• The private university system started in Bangladesh in 1992
• China’s first private universities were founded by missionaries in the late 19th century
• Portugal has many private universities but the most expensive and impressive is the Catholic University of Portugal.
