Should You Intern Abroad?

The answer to this question’s lies with you and you’re educational and career goals. While most internships abroad are unpaid that shouldn’t mean that you automatically discount the option. The experience you will gain and the growth you will experience as a person can serve you better in the long run than money.

Most internships in Latin America are unpaid because these companies simply cannot afford to pay you a wage. It is vital not to overlook the opportunity here because of lack of pay. The experience you can gain from living and working in a different culture and the possible academic credit available can make this well worth it. European internships are often unpaid if you are not a citizen and that is due to the difficulty of facilitating work visas. Still, spending a summer in Europe even if unpaid, well lets just say there are worse things to do with your time. Branching out and working in other countries can lead to job offers in the future and it’s more likely you will be a more daring traveler after an interning experience abroad. There are many places you can turn to help you decide if this is right for you. Ask around campus for any other students who may have interned or worked abroad and get their opinion on the experience. Or, visit your campus advisor or the internet to locate organizations that specialize in matching students and companies for summer internships.
