How to Choose a Major and a Minor Field of Study


One of the hardest decisions that you will make is not choosing a college but instead choosing a major and a minor field of study. Before you choose a major and a minor field of study it is important to understand what both represent.

A major, is a field of study that you are most interested in. This is the field of study that you will mainly learn about in your junior and senior yeas of college. For example if you want to be a teacher then you will choose education as your major field of study.

A minor, is a field of study that is secondary to your major. For example someone who majors in broadcasting may minor in journalism. This way the individual could work in several different areas and mediums of the media.

Another example would be that if you majored in art and choose education as your minor. This duo of studies would allow you to teach art if you so desired at some point in your career. When you are deciding on a major and a minor field of study you want to pick two areas of study that interest you the most.

Evaluate your interests, hobbies and personality when choosing a major and a minor field of study. If you do not like working with the public you may want to choose a major and minor field of study that allows you to work independently. One of the most important things to remember is that you can always change your major or your minor field of study if you are unhappy in your current situation.
