Car Insurance
Why get car insurance?
Car insurance allows you to be protected against the dammages that you may have done. Also, it compensates you if you have a problem with your vehicle. That is what we call being ensured from both sides: ensured if you are the one who caused the damages... or being ensured against the damages you caused and the damages of your own vehicle.
How does it work?
Student car insurance can be pretty exensive for new drivers, because according to statistics, young drivers make more accidents than people who are of a higher age, which elevates the cost of the insurance. In France, like in many other countries, the elevation of the cost can go up to 200% more than the basic rate.
This way, you pay an annual or monthly rate and you are ensured against the accidents you may cause. If you are implicated in an automobile accident and the other vehicle is completely destroyed, you don't need to personally pay that other person. According to the situation, the insurance company of the other person will pay its repair or replacement expenses, or will contact your own insurance company to get the required amount.
If you are responsible for the accident, it is very probable that your insurance premiums will elevate during your next insurance renewal. According to statistics, a person who is involved in an accident has a better chance of having a second accident than a person who has never been involved in an accident.
If you are only ensured from one side and your vehicle is damanged, you won't be compensated. You must personally pay for the damages. With an older car, this one sided insurance is sufficient. However, if you have a high value car, it is preferable to be ensured from both sides.
With a complete insurance protection, you are often ensured against theft, fire, accidents, vandalism, etc. If something happens to your vehicle, you would be able to be compensated by your insurance company.
Which student car insurance to take?
Look in the phone book, in the yellow pages, on the internet, in student newspapers, in paper advertisements, on the television... Insurance companies never stop making advertisements!
But be careful! Certain companies are much more expensive than others. It is better to make a list of the insurance companies and apply to all of them. An application shouldn't cost that much or can even be free. However, it can be tiring to answer all of the questions to get a quote, so limit your list to 4 or 5 insurance companies. Ask your friends' and parents' advice if they have car insurance.
Do not choose an insurance company blindly, even with other people's recommendations. Your situation may allow you to save more money than another person filling out an application. The price of student car insurance depends on your age, your experience, if you attended driving coruses or not, the number of accidents you have made, the protection plan you want, the brand of car you have, its year of construction, and many other caracteristics which you will have to hand to the insurance company.
It is now common that insurance companies let you send in your application through the internet. Often enough, banks and insurance companies can cut expenses by eleminating some staff and offices, and offer their services directly by phone and internet. Think about it, and don't apply to any unknown insurance company!
