Deciding between a paid internship and a volunteer experience depends a lot on your future goals and your current financial situation. If you can’t afford to volunteer it is understandable. Not everyone is able to give of their time no matter how worthy the cause.

Internships can be a valuable experience and can offer a little extra money in your pocket for expenses. Volunteering may not offer the financial boost but the feeling you will get and the free educational experience pay off in different ways. Finding a cause you feel passionate about and giving of your time can change the way you feel about yourself and the world. Not to mention, any experience you can list on your resume will make prospective employers more comfortable that you are a well-rounded person. Deciding between the two experiences depends a lot on your situation and your career choice. If you are interested in international aid or social programs, volunteering in a third world country provides experience virtually impossible to get in a class room. Non paid internship is another option for those who can afford to forgo a paycheck. Finding companies to intern with is easier if you are willing to opt for non paid and looking more for an on the ground experience in your field of interest. Spend some time speaking to your campus advisor or other students to decide which is the best prospect for you. The value of these experiences, no matter what you choose, is priceless.
