A passport has become harder to get in time for overseas trips if not applied for well in advance. Due to more stringent federal laws, the passport should be applied for at least six to eight months in advance of a trip if possible. A visit to the campus doctor or a family physician will aid students in finding out the types of vaccines they will need for a certain country. In some cases a student will not be able to leave on a scheduled school trip to a foreign country if they have not had the proper vaccines and documentation of them.

Researching the target destination is a key step in planning for safety. Knowing the terrain, the local customs, the culture, and native language can improve the students experience and safety.

Purchasing travel insurance is a great idea for students. Any number of accidents can and have occurred during overseas traveling. Travel insurance can help if the student needs medical help. The insurance can also cover items that are stolen, reimburse tickets if a flight is canceled, and help purchase tickets home if a student becomes stranded in a foreign country.
