Safety Tips For Traveling Students
Traveling can be an exciting adventure! New sights, sounds, tastes, and new people are just a few things students traveling abroad will experience. Most students will have a wonderful time on their travels and vacations, but to make sure a happy excursion will not turn into a nightmare students should follow some common sense guidelines to keep themselves safe.
Get to know the area before departing. Pay as much attention as possible to the local culture and check online for news pertaining to the destination. Learning a few key phrases/words in the local language can help immensely.
Upon arrival, be observant. Watch out for suspicious activities or people and always act in a respectful manner. Traveling with others will improve safety, but avoiding large crowds and not frequenting places where Westerners congregate can improves chances of not being caught in some type of protest against Americans.
Avoid moving about at night while alone. Walk facing traffic on well lit highways or streets. Move away from darkened alleys or parking lots. Even at home these areas are risky to the lone individual, especially at night when darkness can easily cover malicious acts.
Stay healthy! Staying on top of health will help a student stay more alert to his or her surroundings. When in a hotel, keep the door locked at all times and never take valuable possessions into a room. Ask for them to be placed in a hotel safe or just leave them at home to begin with. Keeping luggage locked will also lower the risk of having it broken into during traveling.
