Students and Financial Aid

The federal government offers more than $80 billion per year in loans, grants and work-study programs. There are other sources of aid available as well and depends on your situation and which school you are attending.

Your campus financial aid office is a great place to start your search for financial aid to cover your education. They will have plenty of information to get you started in your search and may well have programs available that you had not thought of. Federal student aid applications should be turned in as soon as possible because once the funds are gone for the semester, they are gone. Apply on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov, and you will be instructed on how to track your application. You will be required to turn in the appropriate financial paperwork and possibly your parent’s paperwork. On the site you will be instructed what you will need such as tax returns. Gather the documents right away and mail them as instructed so your application will be processed without delay. If you do not follow the instructions exactly and before the stated deadline your application may be processed without pertinent information, leading to a denial of financial aid. The Department of Education offers, on its website, seven steps to follow to figure how much you will need and how best to get it. They offer different tips and ideas to finance your education and what you will need to maintain good standing for future grants.
