Student Loans and Scholarships
Ideally your education would be fully financed through scholarships as they require no repayment. For most of us that will not happen and we have to find other ways to finance our schooling.
Using a combination approach to funding our educations can decrease the student loan amount we have to pay after graduation. Finding and applying for scholarships has become much easier with the popularity of the internet. There are web sites whose sole purpose is to connect students with available scholarships and they make the application process less grueling. Signing up with as many organizations as possible will turn you onto scholarship opportunities you probably never dreamed were out there. There are scholarships for minorities, certain majors, athletes, those with strong academic achievement and students who can demonstrate financial need. Take the time to inquire on campus for local, small awards that may not be advertised otherwise. Getting in touch with your financial aid office can be rewarding as they may know of scholarships that would otherwise be hard to find. Once you have exhausted the scholarship process and any other grant possibilities it is time to look at student loans. The key to student loans is exhaustive research. You will want to secure loans with the lowest rate and the most flexible repayment options. After graduation, when the time comes to start repaying those loans you will thank yourself for dealing with a lender who is willing to work with you in case finding employment takes longer than anticipated.
