Health Concerns of Traveling Students
While traveling abroad the most common complaint of students and other travelers is diarrhea. This complaint is usually caused by the E. Coli bacteria which resides in the small intestine and can cause diarrhea, bloating, and sometimes vomiting. Avoiding the bacteria is as easy as following this advice given to travelers-"Boil it, cook it, peel it or forget it." Only eat well cooked meals or raw fruits and vegetables that can be peeled. Avoid raw seafood and meats completely.
Malaria is also a very common ailment when traveling to tropical and sub-tropical climates. The best way to avoid contracting malaria is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. These insects are the primary carriers of malaria. Many tropical areas spray insecticides to lower mosquito populations along with the risk of malaria. The mosquitoes that carry the disease are most active at dawn and duck. Using repellant can help reduce the risk even more.
Jet lag can be experienced by anyone. Time changes can cause insomnia and fatigue. The best cure for jet lag is to immediately sleep, eat, and wake on the local’s time schedule. This will force the body into adapting quicker than sleeping as soon as reaching the destination.
Motion sickness can be avoided or reduced by following simple and easy to implement tips. Never read while moving, face in the direction of travel, and pass on strong foods/liquors before departing. Strong odors can also trigger or aggravate motion sickness. Also try to gain a position that restricts movement of the body to reduce symptoms.
